Valentia Island has a population of slightly over 600 people and is connected to the mainland to Portmagee via the Maurice O'Neill Memorial Bridge. The population increases in the summer months as a number of people have holiday homes on the island.
Excellent public toilets in Knightstown and nearby Portmagee.
St. Derarca’s Primary School in Chapeltown. There is also a Creche and Childcare Centre in Chapeltown. The old school in Knightstown is now home to Valentia Island Heritage Centre.
There are three pubs, Boston’s Bar & The Royal Hotel in Knightstown and the Ring Lyne in Chapeltown. Food is also available at all three locations.
Walsh’s Grocery Shop in Knightstown is well stocked. Deo’s Minimarket in nearby Portmagee also sells wine and offers Post Office service.
Valentia Island Community Hospital is purely a nursing home. However, for a charge, South Doc in nearby Cahersiveen (located in St. Anne Hospital can provide mobile emergency care. The phone number is (0818) 355999. Valentia Coast Guard in Knightstown is providing intervention service in case of accidents or emergency situations.
There is a number of catholic churches in Knightstown, Chapeltown and nearby Portmagee and Cahersiveen. There is also a Church of Ireland church in Knightstown.
Valentia Island was one of the main locations where the NBI (National Broadband Ireland) programme was launched. There is high speed broadband available on numerous locations on the island. There are also local companies that provide excellent coverage and service in the area, like Ivertec Ltd. and SCC Broadband Ltd.
